Chemical Recycling of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polyurethane for Aviation Applications

Abstract Carbon fibres are widely used in carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) for aviation, automotive, windmills, sport and many more application due to their outstanding material properties. Annually, this generates about 62,000 tonnes of end-of-life (EoL) CFRP production waste. Current EoL scenarios CFRPs show some disadvantages: Landfilling incineration not sustainable environmentally friendly. recovery by pyrolysis damages the incinerates plastic material. Mechanical recycling shortens is limited value thermosets. However, chemical routes like solvolysis offers great potential recover damage-free as well useful monomers a new generation plastics. Here we provide an overview polyurethane aviation applications. Additionally, first life cycle assessment results presented.
